While we are talking about social media, it is important to mention the often overlooked dangers associated with building an audience.

This article from Gurwinder has changed many minds of both my friends and clients. It is a big part of the reason why I do not care to build a large audience and I avoid appearing in face-first media.

To me, fame seems like a prison, an erosion of freedom, I strongly wish to avoid - particularly if your face is recognisable.

While there are things I can do to reduce the potential problems, for me the upside is outweighed by the downside. This article underscores the importance of strategy and conviction when building your audience.

Here is a quote from the article:

We often talk of "captive audiences," regarding the performer as hypnotizing their viewers. But just as often, it's the viewers hypnotizing the performer. This is known as audience capture. It involves the gradual and unwitting replacement of a person's identity with one custom-made for the audience. This is the ultimate trapdoor in the hall of fame; to become a prisoner of one's own persona
